The Carolina Panthers are coming off of an absolutely dreadful 2010 campaign. But in the NFL, poor performance leads to high draft picks and future potential. With the number 1 pick of the 2011 NFL draft, the team took the Heisman winning and championship winning quarterback and sensation from Auburn, Cam Newton. The fate of Newton and the Panthers will be closely tied over the next five years.

Of course, that's not the only change for the Panthers heading into 2011. The team has a new head coach, as they parted ways with John Fox, and in his place brought in Ron Rivera.

There have also been a lot of rumors about other players, such as wide receiver Steve Smith, who sometimes seems very unhappy and like he moves on, and other times seems perfectly content. It will be interesting to see whether or not he stays with the club for all of the 2011 season or not.

If the team can stay healthy, particularly on the defensive end of the ball, where they always seem to be banged up on the line and in the middle of the field, then that will be a good start for 2011. From there, Newton may end up tossed out onto the field and into the mix sooner than later, and he'll need to rely on the support of running backs Jonathan Stewart and DeAngelo Williams. Fans may end up buying Panthers tickets just to see Newton play, and however he does, he's sure to be a hot topic of conversation.
