The Chicago Whites Sox are a charter member of the American League.

The White Sox haven't won a World Series since 1917. However, their history might have been far different had it not been for the infamous “Black Sox” scandal surrounding the 1919 World Series.

Several star players on the team helped to throw the championship to the Cincinnati Reds in return for payments from gambling interests in Chicago. As a result, Major League Baseball installed an “objective” commissioner and several players involved in the scandal were banned from baseball for life.

They played at Comiskey Park from 1910 until 1990.

This season was supposed to be a very strong one for Ozzie Guillen and the Chicago White Sox. They finished in second place in the AL Central in 2010, and had been in contention until very late in the season. In the offseason, the White Sox brought in slugger Adam Dunn, and the team was anticipating a full season from former Cy Young winner Jake Peavy.

Things haven't gone quite as planned for the White Sox in 2011, however. Still, it has to be said that after a very poor start they have been regaining some ground, and by the end of the year, they could still end up in contention.

Peavy though has been hurt yet again, and has only been pitching decently when he has been out there. Dunn has really been struggling and needs to find his game in a hurry. On the bright side, Paul Konerko and Carlos Quentin have been playing well and slugging away. On the mound, Mark Buerhle is putting together another solid year, while the rest of the staff has been solid if unspectacular.

Can Guillen get the White Sox to turn it around in 2011, and if not, will Guillen still be there in 2012? You never can tell, but the White Sox always seem to catch people by surprise, and the team can only improve after its poor start.
