For the Vanderbilt Commodores football team, playing in the rough SEC, it's hard enough just to try to win some games and be respectable. Last year though the team had to combat even more difficulty, as head coach Bobby Johnson retired in the middle of the summer, less than 2 months before the start of the football schedule. This led to a very rocky, tough year for Vanderbilt, as they hobbled along to a 2-10 record, including a number of blowout losses, such as a 43-0 loss against Georgia.

Now though, for 2011, the team has a new full-time head coach in James Franklin. Franklin is hoping to bring some respectability and pride back to the program, which not too long ago was experiencing a revival of sorts, capped off by a 2008 bowl game appearance, a victory over Boston College in the Music City Bowl.

The 2011 schedule for the Vanderbilt Commodores won't make it very easy though. They have to go on the road to play South Carolina, Alabama, Florida and Tennessee, while they host Connecticut, Ole Miss, Georgia, Arkansas and Kentucky. The season begins with a three game home stand, so if they can come out of there at 2-1 at least, then the rest of the season should be smooth sailing. That's all that the Commodores can ask for in a year that surely will have some ups and downs along the way.
