The Northwestern Wildcats certainly have not been a historically strong football team, at least not in the past few decades. But coach Pat Fitzgerald has his team on the rise, and the Wildcats football team has been competing very well in the Big 10 and also reaching some big bowl games.

There is a problem though, as the team went 9-4, 8-5 and 7-6 in the last three seasons, in that order. Also, after all three of those seasons, they lost their bowl games. So Northwestern football needs to find a way to take the next step, and for the team, that really lies in winning close games that they have lost.

For example, in 2010 they played Purdue in the beginning of October, at home, and as the #25 team in the country, but they lost by three points. A week later they lost again at home to Michigan State, by 8 points, and in their bowl game against Texas Tech they just a thriller by a touchdown, falling 45-38.

Looking to the 2011 schedule for the Wildcats, it won't get any easier with the addition of Nebraska to their conference, and they have to travel to Lincoln to play in November. But they'll get Michigan, Penn State and Michigan State all at home, which is good for the team and offers them a chance to hopefully win some of those tough, close games.
